Team Activity Ideas for 2023

From the Desk of Mary

As we shift into another new year, many companies are tentatively stepping out of the virtual event realm and back into in-person, team building events. These events are a great way to build company culture, allowing remote or hybrid workers an invaluable chance to connect and socialize with the team.

This type of team building is not only fun, but also leads to business success: a recent Gallup poll showed that highly engaged team members are 23% more productive and 18% more profitable than teammates who aren’t engaged in their workplace.

Of course, not everyone is excited about team building. We’ve all been through the lame ice-breakers, stale sandwiches, and boring presentations that lead to more negativity than increased engagement. It can be hard to come up with fun, engaging event ideas, especially if it has been a while since you’ve done one in person, so we’ve put together the following list of fun and unique event ideas 2023 to help encourage culture building and teamwork:

Scavenger Hunt

This is a great way to help new or remote staff get to know a space. Have groups, pairs, or even individuals look for items from around the office, company headquarters, or event space. It’s a great way to spark some fun competition, break the ice, and showcase lesser known parts of your company (like that unknown extra bathroom on the first floor or the funny statue on the roof). Just remember you need something to win if you’re competing, so have some really great prizes on hand for whoever gets done first.

Escape Room

What better way to build a team than to solve a series of puzzles together? Escape rooms are a change of scenery and give coworkers a chance to showcase different skills. It’s also an insightful way for managers to see how their teams operate under pressure, allowing them to support them better at work.

Escape rooms are extremely popular and can be found in most cities. Some even have mobile escape rooms that will come to you and turn your office or event space into a customized experience just for you! No matter where it is though, aim for the easy or medium difficulty rooms so everyone feels like a success.

Professional Workshop

Show your team that you believe in them and support their future with professional skills classes, webinars, off site training, or other relevant workshops. Give everyone a chance to participate, encourage new skills, and positively influence the productivity and innovation of your whole company.

Paint Night

This is a great way for people to relax and express their artistic side! Paint and sip nights are popular and a great way to support local business. While these are often done at a studio, some artists will bring the materials to you to complete at your event or office. And if canvas painting isn’t your style, there are other similar activities as well, like ceramics, glass blowing, or painting pottery.

Volunteer Together

Nothing brings together a team like helping those in need. Whether it’s volunteering at a local food bank, walking dogs at an animal shelter, or doing a fundraiser to support your favorite charity, volunteering is a great way to show off your company values while promoting team bonding.
